Southern California Girls Lacrosse
Girl's Lacrosse Competitive and Recreational Landscape in Southern California
Southern California is growing fast in women's lacrosse and we recognize all programs will bring a unique approach, network and coaching staff.
Club Team vs. Rec team
Club Teams typically formulate teams of like minded players from the area (or not) who train together to compete in various tournaments (local and national). Depending on the tournament, college coaches look to those tournaments to recruit by grade year. Club Teams have experienced coaches who have played or have coaching experience to play at a higher level. Aligning with the right club team should align with your daughter's athletic goals. Note, every club program is NOT created equal. It's important to do the research as the models can vary from club to club. Club teams may also provide a pathway for college recruitment. Club teams are more competitive than Rec and typically hold tryouts. Club teams will charge seasonal or yearly dues and travel may be required in state or across state depending on the tournament. Player dues cover costs including coaches, coaches travel, tournament fees, fields, insurance, field equipment and other related expenses. Coaches are typically paid for this role. Clubs focus is more on fitness and team IQ as it is expected fundamentals are already there. Skill level will vary depending on the club team you join.
Rec (Recreational) Teams typically formulate where the primary purpose of the activity is participation, with the related goals of learning the game, making friends, physical fitness and most importantly having fun. All can participate, tryouts may happen when there are too many girls where teams can be formed by skill level. The philosophy here, all should learn the game and play no matter the skill level. Rec teams may request seasonal fees to cover fields, equipment, referees and some times coaches. Coaches volunteer their time and could be parents or former players and coaches. Rec focuses more on the fundamentals, understanding the game and team/game IQ. Skill level will vary.
Our advice: DO WHAT'S BEST FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.
Many variables come into play from logistics to financials, college recruitment (via the tournaments they enter - as not all tournaments have recruiting), reputation, etc. Whatever is your WHY, do what's best for you or your daughter's goals. The objective for both club and recreational lacrosse is for your daughter to develop her athletic goals, stay in shape, increase their knowledge of the game and simply, just get better.
Triad Athletes is not directly affiliated with any of these programs, but if your family is looking for more information on notable programs, you can link to the program websites below and corresponding Executive Directors or coaches can help you with you or your daughter's athletic goals.
